Genesis 2:24-25: Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
“It was good.”
These words have often been used to describe acts of fornication. It highlights in one way how the standard of what is “good” has been warped, re-wrapped and presented back to us. The scriptures warned us – woe unto them that call evil things good! (Isaiah 5:20).
In Genesis 1 we find God’s stamp of approval on everything He created when He saw that, “It was good”. What is good in the world and what is good for us rests solely on God’s standard of goodness. One way of saying “it is good” could also be that it works the way it is supposed to.
When sin entered, we lost the ability to fully function like we were created to. Solomon came to this conclusion in Ecclesiastes 7:29 – “that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.” No wonder the world is in chaos today. It explains why we have so many groups advocating for all sorts of ungodly sexual “rights”. Now there are people who believe sex is just another physical appetite that must be catered to like hunger or sleep. This they say without acknowledging that hunger, sleep and any other human drive are also subject to a higher law by the One who created man.
Unlike the need for sleep and hunger, sex is much more complex. When you recognize that this body was created to be the temple of God’s Spirit, it will affect how you view who should enter that body through sex, and in what context. (1 Corinthians 6:15-20). As God created it in the beginning with Adam and Eve, the context of marriage between a man and a woman is the Bible’s only prescription for this sacred act called sexual intercourse. So when a married woman says to her husband, “It was good…” then we know it was truly good!
To walk in sexual purity we must believe and understand that God created human nature and sexual desire as good things but mankind’s bondage to sin has made them weapons of mass damnation. Yet there remains hope for those who choose to live within the precinct of God’s rule, that you can enjoy the fulness of sexual satisfaction if you commit to walk in God’s plan. Later we will delve into sexual purity in the context of marriage and in the important stages of singleness, whether God is leading you into lifelong marriage or lifelong singleness.
Think on these things…
Prayer StarterOh God, my Lord, open my eyes to see beautiful things out of your word. Let your thoughts and purpose for purity be accomplished in me and I submit to your plan for my life.
